Attention Employers – Are You Doing All You Can?

by admin on March 2, 2008

That is, are you doing all you can to ensure that your employees are good,
upstanding citizens? The future of your company or business could be at
stake if you’re not. In fact, if you aren’t thoroughly checking to see
exactly who you’re hiring, you could be putting your business and your
other employees at risk. A friendly face doesn’t always signify an honest
person. Here are some tips that will help you ensure the safety of your
business and yourself when hiring employees.

Check Their Work History

It’s important to see what companies have hired this individual before,
and how long they lasted at that company. This will give you some insight
as to what kind of individual you are about to hire. Obviously if the
applicant has kept one or two jobs for most of his or her working life,
they are probably a pretty responsible person. Beware of those applicants
who have jumped around a lot in their jobs. What is the reason they haven’t
stayed with one job or two jobs?

Check Civil Court Records

Has your applicant ever had a judgment placed against them? What was it for?
Often, their civil court records can give you some idea of what sort of person
they are. A lot of judgments against a person are a sign of some sort of
irresponsible attitude. However, no judgments would obviously mean they
have been aware of what their responsibilities are and what they need to
take care of. In this situation, no judgments are most definitely a good
sign.

Check Criminal Court Records

Perhaps the most important thing of all when you’re checking into a potential
employee’s history is their criminal court records. You do not want to hire
someone who may be a risk to your other employees, yourself, or your company.
There have been many cases where a neglectful employer has hired an employee
who has been convicted of robbery, theft, rape, and even murder. Can you afford
to take this risk, considering criminals come in all sorts of friendly smiles?

Finding All of This in One Place

Whereas not very long ago, it would have been difficult to find all of this
information in one place, today it is definitely not that hard. By simply
typing in the Social Security number from the application you received or
from your applicant’s driver’s license, you can obtain all of this information.
It’s not only responsible to ensure the safety of everyone who works for you,
it’s good management.
